There are also pathogen-driven adaptive responses, involving clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), which are described later in the chapter.
CRISPR/Cas9
Most of today's cutting-edge research in the field of molecular biology and genome editing is based on the accidental discovery of the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 system in E. coli by Japanese scientists Ishino et al. in 1987.
The CRISPR locus constitutes multiple regions of palindromic 20-40 repeated bases separated by unrelated, non-repetitive short sequences (spacers).
But it was only during the early 2000s that the true potential of CRISPR/Cas9 as a revolutionary genome editing tool was discovered.
